Доцент Юрий Янакиев работи в областта на социалната психология, клиничната психология и невропсихологията. Защитава магистърска степен (2000г.) и докторат (2006г.) с почетно отличие (summa cum laude) в Университета в гр. По, към Академията в гр. Бордо, Франция. От 2009г. работи като преподавател в катедра „Психология“ на Пловдивския университет „Паисий Хилендарски“. Хабилитира се по „Социална психология“ през 2015г. Директор е на магистърските програми „Психология на управлението“ и „Училищна психология“ в Пловдивския университет. От 2011г. изпълнява длъжността Директор на Университетския център за доброволчество, който организира и провежда стажове за студенти от страната и чужбина. Участва в ръководството на Педагогическия факултет в качеството му на заместник-декан (2015-2019г.) и научен секретар (2012-2015г.). В периода 2011-2019г. е факултетен координатор по програма „Еразъм+“. Преподава като гост лектор в редица университети в Испания, Франция и Полша.

Научно-изследователската дейност на доц. Янакиев включва над 60 публикации в български и международни издания, част от които са реферирани и индексирани. Автор е на монографиите Диагностика на бърнаут синдром при педагогическите специалисти – стратегии за справяне с хроничния стрес на работното място (2019) Комуникация и пространствено познание (2013) и Разбиране при четене (2013, 2016). Публикува учебници и помагала за студенти и докторанти по Социална психология (2018), Социална психология на комуникацията (2014) и Презентация и самопрезентация (2014). Води лекции по „Социална психология“, „Стрес и психично здраве“, „Социална компетентност“, „Психолингвистика“, „Комуникация и управление“, „Реклама и презентации“, „Психология на креативността“ и др. на български, английски и френски език. Член е на Американската асоциация по психология, Дружество на психолозите в България и Съюза на учените в България. Участва в национални и международни проекти и изследвания, най-значими сред които са:
